Case Study 1 - Chilled Food Storage and Distribution Centre
We were approached by a former client with regard to providing new chilling and storage facilities. They also asked us to bring existing buildings up to the same standard.
|
From the outset time was of the essence as it was very important that the project was completed on time with no delays or overruns.
As the new facilities were to connect to existing buildings, a full survey was carried out before any other works were started. All relevant foundation work, prior to erection of steelwork, was carried out by ourselves.
Steel arrived on site a week after the project was given the go ahead and the main steel frame was erected in 2 days. The secondary steelwork was then completed the following day and all safety handrails and nets were put into place. This was promptly followed by the roof cladding, which was finished in 1 day so the preparation of the interior of the building could start on schedule.
The side cladding quickly followed. Insulated food safe composite panels were used for both roof and side cladding which provided a 1 fix easy solution to the customers insulation requirements. This meant that as soon as cladding was completed the building was ready to be chilled and used for storage.
As soon as the new building was completed and in use, work on bringing the existing buildings up to the same specification was started. This involved extra support steelwork being fabricated and erected and again insulated panels being fitted.
Both the new and existing buildings were completed on time. The customer was able to move into them and carry on day to day business with the absolute minimum of disruption.

Case Study 2 - Hay Barn and Cattleyard
From the start, on this project it was important that both buildings were ready for the customer on time, due to the impending harvest and also the need to have his animals under cover by a specific date.

As soon as the site was prepared we marked out and set our own holding down bolts into place ready to receive the steelwork.
The cattleyard building was erected first, quickly followed by the hay barn the following day. Whilst erection of the hay barn was taking place the cattleyard was being prepared for cladding.
Cladding of the cattleyard roof was completed the following day and side cladding in tanalised timber then commenced.
This was swiftly followed by the preparation for cladding of the hay barn which was again completed in the one day.
Side cladding was then completed on both buildings ready for the delivery and installation of the pre cast concrete panels. These were installed by us in both buildings within the week.
With the hay barn handed over to the customer work continued with the cattleyard starting with the fitting of the cladded gates and also the first fix of the feed barriers inside.
The preparation of the concrete feed passage and all relevant areas was then started. This also included a concrete apron outside of the building. All of this was undertaken by ourselves.
As soon as all the concreting had been completed the final fix of all the feed barriers and equipment was finished.
Being involved in not only the main steelwork and cladding but also the organisation of the groundworks and fitting of equipment was a major factor on ensuring that from start to finish of these two buildings we had no delays or hold ups and both were completed on time.

Case Study 3 - Ryton Police Training Centre
We were contacted with regard to removing two supporting walls in order to increase the size of training rooms at Ryton Police Training Centre.

A site survey was carried out and steelwork was fabricated and ready for delivery within the week.
To minimize disruption an area was allocated for offloading and storing the steelwork prior to it being moved into place and was protected accordingly to minimize any damage to the lawns surrounding the building.
All new steelwork had to be taken in through one of the upper floor windows due to lack of access and also to keep the training centre up and running with as little disruption as possible.
Once all temporary support steelwork was in place the two existing walls were removed and the new support steelwork was jacked up into position. All temporary steel was then removed along with all wall remains through the window.
A challenging and interesting project that was completed within a very short timespan.

Case Study 4 - Tortworth Court
Tortworth Court was designed by Samuel Sanders Teulon, and built from 1849-1853 for the 2nd Earl of Ducie.

The grade II listed building was victim to a fire in the early 90s which left 75% of it roofless and open to the elements.
As part of a £20m project, Mace Buildings were contracted to detail, fabricate and erect some 100 tons of structural support steelwork to aid both the removal of debris and also to rebuild it to its former glory.
The close proximity of sensitive existing structures and the fact that all erection had to be completed blind and by using radio communication only, meant that it was a very unique and interesting contract.

Case Study 5 - PA Turney Agricultural Engineers
In the late 90s PA Turneys depot in Middleton Stoney was significantly damaged by fire. Subsequently it was decided to revamp the whole site and bring it up to date and able to cope with the ever increasing size of agricultural equipment.

The fire damaged parts of the building were removed and a new steel frame erected in its place. To enable business to carry on as normal the existing workshop roof was removed only a few sections at a time. The rafters and columns were then reinforced on site and re erected at higher level. This was then re-insulated and re-clad. An extension to the main workshops was also added. Concrete floor planks and stairs were also installed as part of this contract
The existing offices were extended and re-clad to match the rest of the premises.
Although this contract required every part of the existing structures to undergo major renovation and re-structuring the day to day business continued throughout with minimal disruption.
